Congradulations to Greg Laing on his win of the Pyr Rocker and Sue Vilhauer for winning the Binoculars in our Raffle. We netted $824.00 for the Pyr Rescue Club. THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND PARTICIPATION.

History:
The GPCSO was founded in 1977. In the three decades since, our membership has grown steadily. The Club continuously promotes the breed in a variety of ways. On the dog show scene, we hold the Canadian Kennel Club www.ckc.ca licensed specialties and boosters, as well as sanction matches ('fun matches') for all breeds. The Club also sponsors an annual day of temperament testing: The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program, administered by the American Kennel Club www.akc.org , as well as the Therapy Dog test (TD),administered by Therapy Dog International www.tdi-dog.org.

GPCSO members and their dogs enjoy getting out and about in the community. Among other activities, we take part in fund-raisers such as Wiggle-Waggle Walkathon, All About Pets Show, WoofStock and other community events. Pyr People also enjoy getting together. The Club holds an annual picnic in the late summer for the whole family-dogs included of course. There are many contests for the owners and their dogs. A long hike through lovely scenery is a wonderful way to get to know fellow members and their dogs. The day is topped off with a Pot Luck Supper. The Club's social year ends with the annual banquet, held in early December and after the Specialty. The exciting raffle, a silent auction, door prizes, and the chance to see old friends all make the banquet an event to participate.

Perhaps the most important activity of the Club is the work of the Pyr Rescue Committee. The Club helps lost dogs get back to their owners, and find new homes for dogs that have been displaced or rescued. The Club also takes Pyrs from animal shelters wherever and whenever possible and place them in new homes. The Club covers the costs of the vet care, food and temporary housing for displaced and rescued Pyrs. If your family is interested in welcoming a Pyr in need of a home, please call the numbers given below. The Great Pyrenees Club of Southern Ontario is open to new members, regardless of what dog(s) you own. Owning a Great Pyrenees is not only a joy, but also a responsibility which must not be taken lightly. We firmly believe that the more you do with your dog, the more your dog will be able to give back to you, your family and your community.

My name is Lillian Campbell. I am a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) of 15years, and of very few people certified in Canine Massage and Hydro-therapy (CCMT) in Ontario. Hello Everyone:

Wanted to send this note out to share with all our friends.. Stryker and Andre' were entered in the Elora Gorge Dog Show for the 27/28/29 and we wanted to send this note through to let everyone know how things have been going so far for us. Andre' has won the Best of Breed the past two days and has made the cut in a very competitive group so we are very proud of what he has been doing for us in the last couple of months at the shows... We will see what tomorrow has to offer for him with our fingers crossed for a piece of the group.

........... And on to our Baby Stryker... Well she has been showing with great umpf!!! and seems to be enjoying herself emensly, she took the puppy in breed on the 27th and today she seems to know what things are about and they are all about having fun in that ring thing with every one watching. We are so pleased to let everyone know that at 6 months and three days on Christine's birthday that she took winners bitch and puppy in the breed for her first two points towards her Canadian Championship and then went into the puppy group and won the puppy group with a competative puppy group and after an afternoon of rest she went into puppy in show and did very well, we did not win but she showed like she was an old pro at it... I am so proud of her....

I also wanted to once again thank Tamara Green for letting this little girl into our home and kennel, we are having soooooooooo !!!!!!!!! much fun with her. Thank you Tami from all of us her at Sanchor Kennels.

The Great Pyrenees Club of America National Specialty was held April 4 -7 in sunny Phoenix Arizona. My daughter CJ and I flew down to join our friends and my husband Allan who had driven our pyrs, Xena and Solan the week before. While everyone at home here in Ontario was dealing with very wintery weather we were enjoying 85 to 90 degree weather. However it was a chore to keep the pyrs cool .

The venue was beautiful and it was very nice to see our pyr friends from all over the US.

We were very happy to see our Solan do so well under Breeder judge Karen Justin of Impyrial Great Pyrenees winning best of opposite sex in puppy sweeps. Solan went on to win reserve winners dog under respected breeder judge Nancy Coombs of Maranatha Great Pyrenees. The only other Canadian breeder in attendance was our good friend Stacey King along with her husband Jason of Kingsworthy Reg'd. They flew their veteran bitch Can. Ch. Kingsworthy Apple Saucey "Mirage" down and did very well winning first in the 7 to 8 veteran bitch class.

Next year the US national will be held in Westlake Ohio <Cleaveland> April 30- May 4 2008. Conformation judge is Keith Savage of UK. Puppy Sweepstakes judge is Michael Floyd. Veteran Sweepstakes judge is Betty Wade Warmack.

Scampering Along the White Trail With Marci Mandel

As a writer, I tend to look at things not just as they are but also for their symbolic meaning, For instance, a sunrise isn’t just about the sun peaking up over the horizon; but it’s about hope for a new beginning. And a sunset isn’t just about the end of the day; it’s about letting go of what was and trusting that something wonderful will take its place. So when a series of synchronistic events collided on the first day of summer, my husband and I put aside all rationality and let the moment take us, for there had to be a poetic reason for what had take place.

On Monday of that week, I was at a Philosophy circle and we were discussing death and dying. I thought I had let my Great Pyrenees, Morgan, go emotionally, but I guess with her ashes still on the bookshelf and per picture leaning against it, I hadn’t. I pondered why I thought I still needed her and when I realized my true nature, I knew I was being selfish and had to let her move on too. So, Tuesday morning after I scampered about doing some chores, I gathered myself and the urn and headed up to the highest point of land and began a ceremony. I said my thank you’s and goodbyes, and at the strike of noon, a good breeze came up and I released her to soar above.

“Remember who you are Morgan. Remember who you are.” The next day, our neighbor Shirley cam up with the people who bought her cottage to show them how everything worked. The friends when off for a walk and Margaret took a wrong turn and ended up at our place just as I was telling Shirley about Morgan. “Oh”, said Margaret. “We were just offered a puppy this morning. Are you interested?” “What kind,” I asked just to make conversation. My husband and I had talked about getting another dog, but then we realized we’d been enjoying our freedom. “A Great Pyrenees,” called out Fred. Alan and I looked at each other and our jaws dropped. What are the odds? “Let me call the guy and see if it’s still available,” said Fred. Next thing we knew, we were driving down to Lindsay to meet the breeder and the puppy, and again we talked about whether or not we wanted to do this.

Neither of us was strongly for it, but the circumstances were just too odd. Our plan was to see the puppy and tell the breeder that since this happened so fast, we needed the night to think about it. But when we pulled into the parking lot and saw him, we knew we were dead. Steve and his daughter greeted us and introduced us to Tyson. What a happy little fella! People walked by and he was just so friendly-and so too were they. We of course had to take him home with us. Steve’s wife had written up some notes on how to care for him and when I say that their last name was the same as my husband’s, I knew this was meant to be-that there had to be some greater design at play. The little guy cuddled up on my lap all the way home while Alan and I talked about his name. Tyson was cute, but our kids associated with the boxer and thought it had bad karma. After a day of calling him puppy, we settled on Amik.

We were supposed to go canoeing in Quetico Provincial Park and Amik was one of the lakes there. When we looked it up it meant builder of dreams, and so it stuck. As I wrote in my journal what had happened-letting go of Morgan’s ashes one day and magically receiving Amik the next-I began to wonder what drams he might build, and the best dream I could think of was one of a world filled with kindness and generosity. And darned if that’s not what he brought to all who met him his first weekend home-kindness and generosity. His joy and excitement and innocence and dependence made us all better people. You know, maybe we should have called him Sunset to remind us of the joy that can come by letting go of what was and trusting that something wonderful will take its place.

While walking along a scenic road, a man and his dog came upon a high, while marble wall with a tall arch and mother-of-pearl gate. As the pair got closer to the gate, they saw a street of pure gold leading up to it.
A man was seated at a desk to one side of the gate; the traveller called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"
"This is heaven," was the answer. "Would you happen to have some water?" asked the traveller. "Yes, of course. Come in and I'll get you some."
He then opened the gate. "Can my friend come in, too?" the traveller asked, indicating his do. "I'm sorry, bet we don't accept pets." The man thought for a moment before turning around and continuing his journey with his dog at his side.
After walking for a long time, they came to a dirt road leading through a dilapidated farm gate; there was no fence. Nearby, a man was leaning against a tree and reading a book.
"Excuse me! Do you have any water?" asked the weary traveller.
"Yeah, there's a pump over there. Come on in and help yourself."
"How about my friend here?" he asked, gesturing toward his dog.
"There should be a bowl by the pump."
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand-pump with a bowl beside it. The traveller filled the bowl for his dog before having a drink from the pump. When they were finished, they walked toward their host, who was now standing by the tree.
"What do you call this place?" asked the traveller.
"Heaven."
"That's interesting. The man down the road said that was heaven, too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell."
"Doesn't it make you mad that they also use the name Heaven?"
"No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friend behind."

The Rainbow Bridge...

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When a Pyr dies that has been especially close to someone here, that dog goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the dogs who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor, those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hand again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your wigglebutt, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together...

Homemade Treats!!!

Many pet owners hand-feed the dry form of the food to their pets as a treat. Homemade treats can also be made out of your pet dry or canned food. If you’re using canned product(s), cut up some bite-sized pieces and bake in your microwave oven for approximately 2.5-3 minutes. If you are using a conventional oven, bake @ 350 for approximately 30 minutes or until desired texture. This will change the texture and make an excellent treat for your pet, while still feeding them their necessary diet. If you are feeding dry form, grind the kibbles into flour using a blender, and mix with enough water to form dough. Shape into a Dookie! And bake them on a cookie sheet in the oven for approximately 30 minutes @ 350 until crsip. All homemade treats need to be stored in the refrigerator no longer than 5-7 days to maintain their freshness and prevent spoilage. As you know, it is very important for your pets to stay strictly on their prescribed diet, and this will allow them to feed special and spoiled.

THESE HOMEMADE TREATS SHOULD NOT EXCEED 5% OF YOUR PETS TOTAL DAILY INTAKE AS BAKING THE TREATS DOES ALTER THE NUTRITIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DIET.

With very limited showing and only 13 months of age, Algebra, wins Best of Winners for the Breed by Exhibitor Class at the Caledon Kennel Club Show held Nov. 24th, 2006 in conjunction with the Regional and National Specialty. This was Algebra’s first Booster and we could not be more proud of this handsome, well balanced young male who is always owner handled.

Originally bred by the Basque people in the Pyrenees Mountains to guard their flocks of sheep against Bears and Wolves, the "Patou" was taken by King Louis IV to the Palace of Versailles. The Great Pyrenees then became sentry dogs at many of the immense mountainside Chateaux in France. Their size, strength and courage make them loyal, steadfast guardians of home and family. Gentle and consistent training, combined with early socialization will bear major dividends in love, devotion and companionship. The GPCSO helps find homes for discarded and displaced Pyrs. They are all carefully assessed for health and temperament before being adopted. Be prepared to answer a questionnaire. Do not feel offended because we are trying to find good permanent homes for our charges. This is in the best interest of your family as well as the dog. We care for dogs of all ages and sizes. The breed requires a secure fenced area and regular exercise as well as obedience training, which enforces your bond between the family and the dog

Great Pyrenees History...

If we were to name the best all-around dog for town or country, we would say without hesitation, "The Great Pyrenees"!! Possessing a breath-taking beauty, a wonderful disposition, and a calm, stately bearing, the breed is completely suited to filling the role of companion and guardian of the home.

The luxuriant coat of the Great Pyrenees is predominantly white, with grey, black, badger and occasionally, red markings. An unusual, almost unique characteristic is the set of double dewclaws on the hind feet, which are thought to act as 'snowshoes' in the deep snow of the mountains. Adult males can weigh up to 135lbs; females up to 120lbs. For such a large dog, the Great Pyrenees has a very low metabolic rate, resulting in far less food consumption than for breeds of comparable size.

The ever-increasing interest in this beautiful and historic breed has sparked debate about it's origins. Although the breeds presence in the Pyrenees Mountains is documented as far back as Roman times. It is believed that the Great Pyrenees has existed in much the same form for at least 4000 yrs.

These magnificent dogs have been guarding flocks and herds in the Pyrenees Mountains for many centuries. Originally, the predators they warded off were wolves and bears. In Canada today, however, the Great Pyrenees used as livestock guardians are far more likely to encounter feral dog packs and coyotes.

As a protector of the family, no breed could be more devoted, sensible and wise. It has been said, truthfully, that the Pyr's judgement of character can be relied upon absolutely. Tidy and fastidious by nature, the Pyr is easy to keep in condition, and, despite his/her size, is ideally suited to life as a family pet. To attain the best relationship between children and your dog, and to foster the dog's good nature and sound temperament, parents mus educate their children as well as the new pup. www.ckc.ca

Although the Pyr is the best all-around dog, let's not forget that he/she can still bark, dig, shed and-at times-drool! A Pyr in good health also needs a long walk or two and run now and then. In all weathers (the love cold and snow!). Owning a Great Pyrenees is not only a privilege, but also a responsibility. Remember-that adorable, fluffy puppy will grow up to be and adult weighing over 100+ lbs. Most important, Pyrs love to be with their people/family-they are the companions and protectors. If you want a dog to tie on a rope and feed once a day, the Great Pyrenees is not for you. (In fact, very few dogs will thrive under such conditions). Also, Pyrs like to roam if they get loose, so a pen (at least 5ft by 10ft) and/or securely fenced yard is a must for times when you have to leave your Pyr outside.

Today, the Great Pyrenees are protective companions, show obedience dogs, livestock guardians and goodwill ambassadors doing therapy work in hospitals and seniors homes. If you wish to add a Pyr to your family, we strongly encourage you not to rush into it. Do your homework. Obtain a list of breeders, either from the Dogs in Canada Annual www.ckc.ca, the All About Pet Show (April 6-8) or from on of the Great Pyrenees clubs across Canada.
